April ’22 Reading Round-up

Gallant by V.E. Schwab

Rating: 4 out of 5.

A compelling atmospheric story. I liked the portrayal of Olivia as nonverbal and the fact that this story didn’t have any unnecessary romance. Every character and every scene was important and well-used.

Tender is The Flesh by Agustina Bazterrica

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Creepy and disturbing, this book got under my skin. It is an excellent commentary on the power of capitalism, the mercilessness of consumerism. The ending was a punch in the gut.

The Paris Apartment by Lucy Foley

Rating: 2 out of 5.

“I could feel his warm breath on the back of my neck.” – The only phrase I’ll remember from this book because it was used SO much! I loved Foley’s last two books and was looking forward to this one. But it was such a disappointment. None of the characters was likable enough to be rooted for and the ending was meh.

These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Quite an interesting take on Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet. I liked the shape the story took – the clashing gangsters, the city ready to boil over. A good read.

The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Quite an interesting story. I wasn’t expecting the connection between Evelyn and Monique to be what it turned out as in the end.

Walking to Aldebaran by Adrian Tchaikovsky

Rating: 2 out of 5.

This book made absolutely no sense to me.

The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Every once in a while I like to indulge in a fluffy, smutty romance. This book served the purpose well. I liked Vivienne’s character and the allusions to her being a bit on the chubby side and how that wasn’t the central part of the story. The narration on the audiobook was a bit annoying though.

Greenwich Park by Katherine Faulkner

Rating: 1 out of 5.

Second DNF of the year. Even though most of the reviews are raving, I’m not feeling this book. The characters are either annoying or meh.
